Japanese vocab of the day

February 8, 2008 · 3 Comments

Today, I spotted this Jabber (an instant messaging client similar to Yahoo! Messenger) status of one of my officemates:

Go ji made ni dashite kudasai.

And I thought, “Dashite? Isn’t this the ~te form of ‘dashimasu’? But what does ‘dashimasu’ mean?“.

Waaaaaa, it seems that I have forgotten most of my Japanese vocabs.  Komatta na! (a Japanese expression used when someone is in trouble) :-? No wonder I couldn’t pass the JLPT Level 3 exam. I have already forgotten most of the JLPT Level 4 vocabulary…and I don’t know most of the JLPT Level 3 verbs, kanji, and grammar points as well.  Tsk, tsk, tsk.

Anyway, I looked up the meaning of “dashimasu” using Google. It turned out that “dashimasu” means “to turn in”, and “dashite kudasai” means “please turn in”.

So, the meaning of “Go ji made ni dashite kudasai” means “Please turn in until 5:00″. (“Go” means “five”, “ji” means “o’clock” or “hour”, and ”made ni” means “until”) .

Could it be that my officemate has an assignment that should be turned in by 5:00pm this afternoon? Hmmm… I miss attending Nihongo classes. Too bad I wasn’t able to register in our company’s Nihongo warm-up classes this year. Hopefully, I will be able to register in the regular classes, which will start right after everyone receives his/her JLPT result.

Well, at least, I learned, or rather re-learned, something new today. :)
